Mr. J.C. Smith of Slocomb passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 88.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Slocomb at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014 with Rev. Brad Price and Rev. Ryan Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in Union Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing.
The family will receive friends at the church on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until service time.
Mr. Smith was born December 21, 1925 in Slocomb to the late James Robert and Minnie Belle Andrews Smith. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Slocomb and the Goare Sunday School Class which he attended regularly until his recent illness. J.C. enjoyed fishing and working in his garden where he grew vegetables and enjoyed sharing them with his friends. Mr. Smith proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII and fought alongside General Patton and received an honorable discharge for his loyal service. Mr. Smith retired from the Fort Rucker Fire Department after 20 years of dedicated service and was an avid Alabama fan. Mr. Smith was a member of the Metcalf Masonic Lodge in Slocomb and also worked with the Shriners for a number of years.
In addition to his parents, his first wife and the mother of his daughters, Maxine Williams Smith; daughter, Patricia Presley; his second wife, Sue Rouse Smith; five sisters and two brothers all preceded him in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Janice McAllister (Mike); grandchildren: Dr. M. Scott McAllister (Allison), Kristie Mitchell (Fred) and Katrina Scarbrough (Lee); son-in-law, Bobby Presley; great-grandchildren: Grace Mitchell, Brock Mitchell, John Michael McAllister, Molly McAllister, Libby Scarbrough, Emma Johnson and Anna Grace Johnson; step-children: Bobby Don Pugh, Ronnie Rouse, Brenda Garrozzo (Joe) and Cheryl Hatcher (Tim); six step-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; one brother, Edsel Smith (Addie Merle); two sisters: Grace Enfinger (J.S.) and Nellie Slaughter (Jimmy); several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
Pallbearers will be Fred Mitchell, Lee Scarbrough, Ritchie Bass, Dennis Slaughter, Lee Jones, Steve Watson and Brendon Herrington. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be his great-grandsons: Brock Mitchell and John Michael McAllister.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Sue McCormick, Jo Shipes, Dr. Paola Bass and Gentivia Hospice for the love and care that was so freely given to Mr. J.C. during his illness.
