Mrs. Phoebe Sue Helms Dowling of Hartford Passed away peacefully Saturday, December 30, 2023 at the home of her son, Paul Jason Dowling.  She was 79. 

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb with Rev. Ronald Gillespie officiating.  Interment will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to service time. 

Mrs. Dowling was born February 25, 1944 in   to the late Glady Morrell Helms and Bennie Frank Helms Sr.  She attended Geneva High School and Asbury College.  Sue married the love of her life, Daniel Foster Dowling on June 27, 1963 and they were blessed with two sons, Jeffrey and Paul.  She was employed with the Dothan Eagle and ran the Hartford and Slocomb delivery route for many years. In addition, Sue worked for Geneva County with the Commodities Program and was employed as an accountant with IMC Minerals for 28 years until her retirement.  She was a loving and devoted wife, adoring mother and grandmother, and will be dearly missed. 

In addition to her parents, her husband of 60 years, Daniel Foster Dowling; sister, Nan Rae Crutchfield; and brother, Bennie Franks Helms Jr., all preceded her in death. 

Survivors include her sons: Jeffrey Daniel Dowling, Paul Jason Dowling (Debbie); grandchildren: Jeffrey Scott Dowling (Rebecca), Minnie Fuentes (Jeffrey), Gavin Dowling (Savannah); great grandchildren: Tucker Dowling, Lyra Dowling, Ty Littlefield, Bryce Littlefield, Hudson Dowling, and Saylor Dowling; sister-in-law, Jean Sammons; brother-in-law, Terry Dowling (Helga); several nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends. 

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the entire staff of Gentiva Hospice for the love and care they provided.
