Mrs. Niva Jean Dillard Brooks of Hartford went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, November 22, 2023 at Flowers Hospital. She was 93.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Pondtown Church with Rev. Donna Cumbie officiating. Interment will follow in the Hartford City Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.
The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 p.m. until service time.
Mrs. Brooks was born August 29, 1930 to the late Albert and Leola Miller Dillard. Jean met and married the love of her life, Calvin and they were blessed with one son, Judson. She owned and operated Brooks Department Store in Hartford for 25 years. A woman of faith, she was an active member of Pondtown Church for many years. Devoted wife, mother and adoring grandmother, Jean will always be remembered as a great cook and caretaker and will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Brooks; sister, Joan Watson; and brothers: Dupree, Lehman, Millard, Max, Jimmy, and Lamar Dillard.
Survivors include her son Judson Brooks and his wife Renee; grandchildren: Ryan Brooks (Anna), Rachel Gilbert (Russell), and Reid Brooks (Emily); great grandchildren: Mae, Henry, Jack and Thomas Brooks, and Charlotte Gilbert; brother, Kenneth Dillard (Faye); sister-in-law, Peggy Dillard; several special nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.
