Sunday, April 19, 1942 - Tuesday, November 14, 2023

Mr. Grady Lee Hughes of Slocomb passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family. He was 81. He was the most honest, hardworking, dependable, selfless, loving individual who spent his life cultivating the land. He made a lasting impact on everyone he met.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 on Friday, November 17, 2023 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb with Rev. Dennis Singletary officiating. Burial will follow in the Wrights Creek Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing.

The family will receive friends on Friday at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m., and continuing until service time.

Mr. Hughes was born April 19, 1942 in Fadette, AL to the late Earlie B. and Lela Mae Singletary Hughes. Grady attended school in Fadette where he was a lifelong resident. He made his living off the land growing peanuts and produce. A lifelong farmer who was admired by many for consistently yielding impressive crops by keeping things simple and not having the newest or best equipment. He loved to walk in the woods and down by the creek. Grady spent his free time hunting squirrels and fishing in the back forty. Every Saturday you could find him playing Fantasy Five. He often would drive his truck up and down the dirt roads, stopping to talk about farming, inches of rain, or the possibility of oil wells in Fadette to anyone who was out.  Mr. Hughes will be dearly missed by those who loved and knew him.

In addition to his parents two brothers: Clifton Lavon Hughes, and John Earl Hughes; brother-in-law’s: Jerry Watkins and Gerald Golden, all preceded him in death.

Survivors include his ex-wife and friend, Gloria Nowling; daughter, Dana Hughes Sasser (Greg); step daughter, Tanya White (Keith); son, Danny Hughes (Buffy); grandchildren: Danny Sasser (Brittany), Lee Sasser (Leighanna), Joey Sasser (Megan), and Haylee Hughes (Fiancé, Michael); great grandchildren: Weston, Wyatt, Wade, Wise, Adilyn, Avery, Cruz, and Lily; sisters: Delta Sue Watkins, and Wanda Mae Golden; sister-in-law, Charlotte Hughes; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Teresa, Junie, Angie, and Hope with Covenant Hospice for the love and care that was shown to Mr. Hughes.
