Mr. Reginald “Tater” Mitchell of Slocomb passed away Thursday, September 28, 2023 at his home. He was 82. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at First Baptist Church of Slocomb with Rev. Brad Price officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home of Slocomb directing. 

The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continue until service time. 

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to Autism Support of Alabama, PO Box 661304, Birmingham, AL 35266 or First Baptist Church of Slocomb Choir in Mr. Mitchell’s memory. 

Mr. Mitchell was born April 21, 1941 in Hartford to the late David and Ruth McClaney Mitchell. Reggie was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He was a member of First Baptist where he attended faithfully and served as Sunday School teacher, deacon and member of the choir for many years. He loved sports, especially Alabama football, and Slocomb Redtop football where he made thousands of corn dogs in the concession stand as a member of the past Quarterback Club. In his younger years Reggie played softball, both in a secular league and church league. In more recent years he enjoyed getting his exercise with daily walks all over town chatting with those he encountered along the way. Reggie leaves a lasting legacy for his family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. 

In addition to his parents, son-in-law, Benny Baxley and brother-in-law, Benny Thomley preceded him in death. 

Survivors include his wife, Kaye Mitchell; daughter, Melinda Mitchell Baxley; son, Jeff Mitchell; grandchildren: Drue Ellis (Matt), Skyler Baxley (Brianna), Spencer Baxley (fiancé, Ashley Peters), Kaylyn Beebe (Roy), and Kristin Mitchell (fiancé, Aaron Arnold); great grandchildren: Josiah Baxley, Rayna Beebe, Rylan Sollars, and Colton Mitchell; sister, Mary Ellen Thomley; special niece, Angie Jones (Mike); other extended family and friends.
