Mr. Kent was born June 25, 1929 in Malvern, AL to the late Eddie Baines and Elvie Vinson Kent. Born a sharecropper’s son, Bernice quit school in the 9th grade to plow the fields behind a mule to help his family. He devoted his life to supporting others and left an indelible impression on countless people in the Dothan and Slocomb area. Bernice was known as “The Honeyman” and over the decades provided homegrown honey from his own backyard hives direct to the community. He loved fishing, Alabama football, traditional values and his friends and family. Some of his happiest times were playing harmonica as he accompanied his son Dennis on the guitar and mandolin.
Salty and honest, he believed in “Telling it like it is,” and his word was his bond. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, his wife, Mozell Tew Kent; sisters: Eloise Peters, Eva Lisenby, and Ouida Raines; brothers: Jesse Kent, and T. W. Kent, all preceded him in death.
Survivors include his son, Dennis Kent; grandchildren: Dominique Kent, and Jonathan Kent; sister, Clara Kent Crawford; many beloved nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
