Mr. James Durwood Bruce went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 20, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 89. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Pilgrim Home Baptist Church with Rev. Buddy Hood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory of Slocomb directing. 

The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until service time.  

Flowers will be accepted or contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or Pilgrim Home Baptist Church 13534 West U.S. 84, Newton, AL 36352. 

Mr. Bruce was born November 7, 1927 in Dale County to the late Marion Oscar and Rillie Mae Byrd Bruce. Durwood was an avid sportsman, who enjoyed playing golf and was an avid Auburn football fan.

A proud veteran, Durwood honorably served in the United States Navy. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed. 

In addition to his parents and siblings a grandson, Jeremy Bruce preceded him in death. 

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie H. Bruce, Wicksburg; three daughters: Renay Bruce, Dothan, Sharon H. Anderson (Dewayne), Newton and Carol H. Sellers, Wicksburg; three sons: Gary Bruce (Cathy), Dothan, Walter E. Hardy, Wicksburg and Kenneth W. Hardy (Susan), Wicksburg; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Granberry, Dothan; nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends. 

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to CRNP Nancy Turnham with ECM Associates for the special care she so freely gave during Durwood's illness.

 He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed.

Probably the only one that will remember my name is Renay. I grew up on Hodgesville Road across the road from Durwood's parents & played with Renay when she came to visit. Deepest sympathy.ATTA
