Rev. Hughes was born May 10, 1942 in Geneva County to the late Damon and Merle Brannon Hughes. Huey was a proud veteran of the United States Army and retired as Command Sergeant Major after 42 years of honorable service. He enjoyed showing cows with his children and grandchildren and loved watching his grandchildren as they played football. He was a dedicated servant of Christ, proclaiming the "Good News" to the lost for over 25 years and encouraging believers to press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God. He served as pastor for many churches during his ministry and was the current Pastor of Fellowhip Baptist Church. Rev. Hughes' life is personified in the Apostle Paul's final letter to young Timothy: "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."
In addition to his parents, one sister, Myra Miller preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Sherleen Tew Hughes, Slocomb; three daughters: Teresa Ledford (Tony), Fadette, Lesa Pert (Darren), Malvern and Missy Hughes (James Hendrix), Slocomb; one son, Brian Hughes (Julie), Malone, FL; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren with one on the way; three sisters: Melba Tolbert (Jerry), Fadette, Sandra McFarland (Don), Dothan and Kathy Hickman (Ronnie), Geneva; four brothers: Del Hughes (Diane), Tallahassee, FL, Roy Hughes (Virginia), Hartford, Donald Hughes, Wetumpka and Ronnie Hughes, Ft. Add Your OwnMy heartfelt prayers for all the family. Mr Huey will be missed. He was a pillar of the community and I loved him like a second father. I will keep the family in my thoughts and prayers.
I am so sorry to hear this sad news. I graduated with Huey and always thought that he was an awesome person, his smile was infectious. I pray that God will give Sherleen and all Huey's family the strength to get through these sad days. I haven't seen Huey since graduation; however, as I read through his obituary I realize that he achieved his life and heavenly goals. Today he is celebrating his victory in the arms of our Saviour!
Mr.Huey was a friend to all and especially me, after my parents passed. SALT OF THE EARTH. Fadette will miss him greatly.
