Sunday, May 11, 1924 - Tuesday, November 22, 2016

Mrs. Mary Doris Shields Thomas of Slocomb went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 22, 2016, at Westside Terrace Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was 92.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 25, 2016, at Sorrells Funeral Home in Slocomb with Rev. Brad Price officiating and Sorrells Funeral Home and Crematory directing.  Burial will follow in the Lee's Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 10:00 a.m. and continuing until service time.

Born on May 11, 1924, in the Oak Grove community to the late Jim and Lizzie Shields, Mary Doris was the oldest of three children.  She attended Hartford Schools and married the love of her life, Paul Thomas.  Mary Doris retired from Van Heusen and became a full-time homemaker. She was a longtime member of New Prospect Baptist Church.

Mary Doris loved her Savior, her husband, and her family. Her infectious laugh brought joy wherever she went. Feisty, strong, and determined, she never met a physical task she could not handle and preferred being outside raking yards, picking up pecans, or tending her chickens. Quick to state her opinions, but even quicker to show her affection, she loved fiercely and was, in turn, fiercely loved.

In addition to her parents and her husband of 53 years, her brother and sister-in-law, R.D. and Mary Faye Shields, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters: Sherel Bolin (Max), Phyllis Price (Terry) all of Slocomb; grandchildren: Kelley Harrell (Erwin) of Bainbridge, GA, Carol Lynn Hobart,  Rickey Bolin, Jarrod Price (Amy), all of Slocomb, Wesley Bolin (Jane Ann) of Greenville, SC, and Brad Price (Nicki) of Dothan; sister: Faye Kelley (Joe) of Lynn Haven, FL; brother-in-law Jesse Thomas (Bobbie) of Slocomb; sister-in-law Bessie Lasseter of Dothan; thirteen great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Mary Doris’s grandsons and great-grandsons:  Erwin Harrell, Rickey Bolin, Jarrod Price, Wesley Bolin, Austin Prince, Jackson Harrell, Cade Price, Isaac Price, and Luke Bolin.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the loving and devoted nurses and caregivers of Mulberry Lane at Westside Terrace and to Gentiva Hospice.
