CMSgt L J Adkins United States Air Force (Retired) of Malvern passed away Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was 78.  

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2016 in the chapel of Sorrells Funeral Home & Crematory in Slocomb with Rev. Hosea Parker officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. 

 

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you honor Mr. Adkins memory with your contribution to Gentiva Hospice, 2740 Headland Ave. Dothan AL 36303; or to the charity of your choice.

 

Mr. Adkins was born August 4, 1938 in Coffee County to the late Willie Melvin and Gladys Casey Adkins.  A proud United States Air Force veteran, L J honorably and faithfully served his country achieving the highest enlisted rank of Chief Master Sergeant.  In addition to his military service, he continued in public service and retired from the Civil Service after 27 years. L J enjoyed spending time in his vegetable garden and he loved to fish.  He loved his Lord and was a member of Malvern Baptist Church. He was loved by his family and will be dearly missed. 

 

In addition to his parents , his first wife and mother of his children, Mary Adkins; one brother Lomax Adkins and one sister, Bettye Hancock preceded him in death. 

 

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Bradley Adkins, Malvern; children: Susan Diane Smith (Brian), Malvern, James Adkins (Candi) Malvern and Joe Adkins (Brenda), Foley; sister, Lonie McInnis, Level Plains; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and other extended family and friends.
